the gleaners

i loved the shots in this great film. one shot that stays with me (that i cannot find) is in the hallway while two children are being caned: the beauty of a long shot with minimal movement, confined in a small space with a beautifully controlled and positioned amount of lighting. a masterpiece from a master.

Jerzy Grotowski was king. He questioned theatre to its core. What is the one thing theatre cannot be without? The relationship between actor and audience. He challenged the fundamentals of theatre such as truth and authenticity. This video is of his disciple Ryszard Cieslak. The epitome of grotowski's poor theatre. He is teaching with impulse. The usual process of acting is to build an arsenal of tricks to be able to perform in front of the audience. Grotowski beleived this to be akin to prostitution. So he developed the acting of via negativa where it was not a collection of skills but an eradication of blocks. Where the actor would lose these tricks and just act on impulse. Amazingly the ideal state of mind was not to "want to do something" but rather "resign from not doing it." His theatre is still considered to be the most exciting to witness and be apart of for the audience became actual members in the play and the plays were so intimate with the maximum amount of audience members being 100.

This film by Luca Guadagnino looks deep and powerful. It seems full of amazing shots. One that follows Tilda Swinton through the house is simple elegant and beautiful. The cinematography by Yorick Le Saux looks deceptively simple and immersive.

infinite jest. Listening to DFW talk on the radio to Michael Silverblatt on kcrw. Silverblatt, who has a slightly retarded but innocent voice which is extremely likable, asks DFW if the book has been structured like an algorithm and DFW says that it has: Sierpinski Tirangle, which is a beautiful thing.

i always like looking for ideas for characters, for stories, but an annoying and impossible trait of mine is that i want it to be original. For instance a character that for ever looks at the remnants upon their soiled tissue. This has been in many books but originality, just needs to shift a little to be new. while reading David Foster Wallaces' Infinite Jest i, like so many others, found something beautiful: Steeply watched Marathe blow one nostril into the handkerchief. Marathe was one of the rare types who did not examine the hankie after he blew. i will be posting more about this book.

In these last two photographs i couldn't help myself so i played with the repetition. I find that when i need to cull my photographs and comparing the differences of photographs very difficult especially when they look very similar. So why not take two very similar photographs and place them next to each other instead of the mind bending process of choosing between the two. I did it previously in the ny photographs of two fire hydrants one in focus and the other out.

well today was strange i came i saw and i was, who would have ever guessed that that would have been the case, by the case i don’t mean a suitcase, well i could, do i mean a suitcase...yes i do, a suitcase it is then, im thinking of black leather one, not well worn with gold snap lock and the number dial lock, but there is a problem, im also thinking of one of those silver numbers, they remind me of the nineties, but the nineties trying to be the future...just like future ninjas those haphazard bastards covered in deep fried crumbs, do you know why that is? well i’ll tell you once upon a time there was a man, he liked to deep fry things but he didn’t have a deep frier because they weren’t invented yet so he tried to come up with one but nothing he did worked and he had been trying for quite a stab of his lifetime so he decided that to have more time to make a deep frier he would build a time machine, but that didn’t quite work the way he wanted, it would not go to the past it would only go to the future but this did not matter to...what was his name? was it computer love...no...future face...no...it was deep future, future fried, deep face future or future deep face anyone one you prefer (if you don’t like any of them then you could make up your own and insert it here...................................................................................................................................)
now let me just read and fine where we’re up to...here we are, number dial lock...no thats not it...there was a man...no...ah here it is, here it is but this did not matter for everything in the future was deep fried! so he sent anything he could eat (and things that he couldn’t but did try, oh how he did try) to the future where in about eight minutes time it would return to the past deep fried.

beginnings are what they are; beginnings, and like you i need to begin but beginnings are so passé, even the word passé is passé (coming from an australian mouth passé sounds like you are trying to bring forth an accent you don't understand but feel cultured by doing so, thoughts and images come to my mind of a dining table; people sitting, dressed up, waiting to affect each other in some way or another, pain and pride come to my mind, and one person red gown, tiarra red gloves with doily like frills, a person like you, it is you actually, asks a man a gentle man mind you, to passé the salt, oh how delightfully cultured and funny you are, the gentle man in his tux of starched influence gives a side-long look and you think {i didn't ask him to spit on the face of the person next to him, which is a woman in green, watch it slide down her face with that drooling bubbly roll, and fall onto her plate and exclaim with a rather large grin to everyone but you: do you like my tie!} and he slaps you, the warmth and glow of it leaves a pregnant stain upon your cheek for quite some time, to be precise until your death bed), come to think of it this posting, the title, the photograph with the font and its opacity, the blog itself; is all passé and if it is then so am i, so rather than not being passé i will begin.
